Environment a significant casualty under the TPPA. A new research paper, authored by Simon Terry, Executive Director of the Sustainability Council of New Zealand, reveals that the TPPA’s impact on the environment will be even worse than had been expected from leaked drafts. There are few gains for the environment and serious threats. Foreign investors can sue the Government for compensation if they believe new environmental protections will reduce their future profits. This is likely to restrict the government’s options for implementing laws and policies that are urgently needed to reduce New Zealand’s rising greenhouse gas emissions. The research report is here.
