Today Real Choice released the results of their nationwide referendum on the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Over 12,000 New Zealanders participated in the referendum with a resounding 97% voting no, New Zealand should not ratify the TPP.

Spokesman Ben Rosamund said “given the chance to participate in democracy New Zealanders showed the government they’re on the wrong track. Their job is to implement the will of the people – and we say no!”.

Real Choice ran New Zealand’s first people’s referendum, asking the question ‘Should the New Zealand Government ratify (sign) the Trans Pacific Partnership?’.

Rosamund said “the National government spent $26 million on the botched flag referendum, and we’ve run the largest people’s referendum on on the far more important issue of the TPPA. We’ve shown that kiwis aren’t blinded by this expensive distraction, and that we don’t want our government to sign up to this agreement and sign our sovereignty away.”

“Parliament goes on holiday on the 10th of December, and we hope their New Year’s resolutions are to listen to the people, and make a promise to themselves, and to us. Because we’ve resolved to act, to be direct, and to show what democracy looks like when citizens really get involved.”

“We all know politicians break promises. But if they sign the TPPA, they’re breaking democracy. We won’t sit down while they sell our future down a polluted river. We want New Zealand to be a TPPA free zone” said Rosamund.
