TPPA cartoon competition winners announced

Because the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations are both secret and complex, educating people about them calls for creativity!

“Having fun with TPPA”, a cartoon competition organised by itsourfuture4.localdev and co-sponsors Scoop.co.nz, The New Zealand Society of Authors, the Bruce Jesson Foundation, and the BizDojo Co.Space, was devised to break through this barrier.

The entries, from both professionals and amateurs, successfully translated the TPPA into a form that people can easily understand and laugh at.

The sponsors are pleased to announce the winners of the three $500 prizes:

The Judge’s Prize, chosen by prominent journalist Finlay MacDonald, was awarded to Mike Moreu for his cartoon “Heights“.

Mat Brady won the People’s Choice award with “TPPA=TRAP“.

The student category prize sponsored by the BizDojo Co.Space went to Claire Frith for “Taking the piss“.

These awards were presented at a reception at BizDojo that featured presentations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement’s implications for the New Zealand creative sector by Don McGlashan, Musician and NZ Writer Director representative on the board of APRA; Jennifer Ward-Lealand, President of NZ Actors Equity; Mika, Chair of Nga Aho Whakaari; and Maggie Tarver of the NZ Society of Authors. International expert Krista Cox from Knowledge Ecology International (KEI Online) also gave a presentation on the TPPA’s implications for copyright and the creative sector.

A selection of the cartoons entered into the competition are on exhibition at the BizDojo Co.Space, 155 Karangahape Rd, Auckland until 8 December 2012. All the entries can be viewed at itsourfuture4.localdev/cartoon_competition/
